Morgenstadt at the world's largest fair for Geoinformation INTERGEO in Berlin. Fraunhofer researchers present their work on the use of urban data, autonomous driving and renewable energies. Real Estate Service Provider GEWOBA joins the Morgenstadt network.
Berlin – INTERGEO, the specialized public fair, which takes place annually since 1995, is primarily intended for architects, city planners, engineers and municipalities, but also open to anyone interested in the latest developments in geodesy and geoinformation. This year on 26th - 28th of September more than 17,000 visitors from over 100 countries took part in the fair again and almost 600 exhibitors from 30 countries introduced themselves.
A special feature of this year's INTERGEO was the integrated fair format Smart City Solutions (SCS), in which exhibitors specialized in Smart City were able to present their products and innovations to the public at the Smart City Forum. The Fraunhofer Society's Morgenstadt initiative introduced itself within this specific format as strategic partner and presented numerous research activities.
The first speech was held by Alanus von Radecki, the team leader responsible for the area of urban governance at the Fraunhofer IAO. He presented the newly founded collaborative research project "Value of Urban Data“, which represents one of the research focuses of his team. He stressed in particular the various possibilities resulting from the use of data generated in cities and how they could lead to the development of numerous services that make our agglomerations more sustainable and livable.
Along with Radecki, other Fraunhofer researchers presented to the plenum their research activities. Alexander Schmidt presented the latest spin - off from Fraunhofer, the smart city marketplace »Bable«, his colleague Marielisa Padilla presented the City Lab in Brazilian Joinville created in collaboration with the Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) where innovative mobility concept is being developed and Claudius Schaufler gave insights from his research on autonomous driving and how it could result in reduction of traffic pollution in cities. Gerhard Stryi-Hipp from the Fraunhofer ISE held the final speech in which he described how he and his team are using GIS technologies to identify suitable locations for wind and photovoltaic systems to contribute in energy system transformation in the Mongolian capital, Ulan Bator, which is still heavily dependent on fuel. Besides Fraunhofer researchers, our network partners from INRIX, DGNB and the cities of Pegognaga and Reutlingen spoke as well at the Smart City Forum. Markus Flammer, representative of the the city of Reutlingen from Southern Germany, for example, spoke about the ongoing work of the Smart Urban Services project, which aims to develop future urban services for Reutlingen and Chemnitz, such as data usage for intelligent parking space or waste management.
At the end of INTERGEO the Morgenstadt network partners also met at the last network meeting of the year. A new member was introduced there. The real estate service provider GEWOBA, based in Bremen, with more than 40,000 residential units, was presented by the Chairman of the Board, Peter Stubbe. The head of Morgenstadt network Dr. Natalie Pfau-Weller was pleased with the growth of the initiative: "It's always nice to find new partners who actively contribute and want to help us shape the urban future together. We are particularly pleased that such an important company in the real estate sector has now expanded the portfolio of the network by becoming an important component of it ".
